Diamond Yorkie Socialization Program
The Diamond Yorkie Program provides neurological stimuli for their puppies. Like children, puppies have a small window of time during brain development when they are most impressionable. This is called the imprinting, or critical learning period. For puppies, the imprinting period is during the first 14 weeks of life.
Yorkies and our Biewers learn more during this time than they can learn in a life time. Therefore, the quality and quantity of what the puppies experience will have a large impact on their future personalities and determine the formation of many of their “good” or “bad” behavior tendencies.
First 7 Weeks of a Yorkie or Biewer Puppy (1st Socialization Period)
In the first 7 weeks of life, yorkies and Biewers develop their five senses. They begin walking, growing baby teeth, transitioning to eating solid foods, and cultivate likes and dislikes.
By 6 weeks, the puppies are transitioning from needing mommy for survival to independence. Learning is occuring rapidly. It is important for Diamond Yorkie breeders to provide several types of stimulas: neurological, a multifaceted environment, and a loving involvement.
During this time, there are also very critical lessons that the puppies must learn from their dog moms and siblings. Therefore, our yorkies and Biewers are not sent to their adopted home before 7 weeks of age.
As early has one week puppies are handled twice daily. The puppies are held for only a few seconds because it is important not to overstimulate them or their mother.
As the puppies grow, they receive puppy massages. Starting from their nose, we massage all the way to the bottom of their paws. It’s important to touch their feet to aid in making the puppies more comfortable while have their nails clipped.
In addition, we let the puppies hear hair clippers. The puppies need to know clippers are part of their life. They should not be fearful of being groomed.
This creates puppies far less anti-social and timid as well as increasing overall trainability and socialization. While puppies are exposed to all kinds of new and exciting things, all puppies are prepared for each buyer’s particular needs. from the very beginning. As an example, puppies that will be cohabitation with children or other animals are continually exposed to these stimuli in order to make the transition on the new family and the puppy smooth. Travel is another example of stimuli for which certain puppies need to be prepared. However, we evaluate each potential buyer for the specific preparations their puppy will need.
7–14 Weeks (2nd Socialization Period)
The optimal time for puppies to be placed with their new human families is at 7-8 weeks of age. As soon as your puppy comes home, time is of the essence for you to provide a huge heaping of high quality socialization and schooling. This is the key to a creating a socially self-confident, well-behaved puppy that is strongly bonded to you. It is also the key to preventing yappy, shy, and/or aggressive behaviors from developing later in life!
Fear-Impact Period: During the 2nd Socialization Period, when your puppy is around 8-11 weeks of age, it is important to be aware of what is known as a Fear-Impact Period. If puppies have “bad” or scary experiences during this time, the impressions are likely to last a lifetime and resurface during maturity. So, protect your puppy from these long-term effects by avoiding bad experiences. Should your puppy become afraid for any reason, dangerous or not, immediately step in and remove him/or her from the situation. That is good parenting!
These are only a few things done as part of the Diamond Yorkie Socialization Program.
